Most U.S. states and the District of Columbia require nail technicians to complete a manicurist or cosmetology program. These programs typically take about 6 to 12 months to complete and lead to a diploma or certificate. Most states require licensure, which involves passing an exam. continuing education may also be required to maintain a license.
The apprentice requirements vary from state to state, but in general, you will need to be at least 18 years old and have completed a high school diploma or equivalent. Some states may require you to complete a formal apprenticeship program approved by the state board, while others may allow you to work under the supervision of a licensed nail technician.
You will also be required to take and pass a written examination administered by the state board. In some states, you may also be required to take and pass a practical examination. Once you have met all the requirements of your state board, you will be issued a nail technician license.
